RMN Cerebral are large, tube-shaped machines that create a strong magnetic field and direct radio waves at the area being imaged. The exam is painless. It is very important to stay perfectly still while the images are recorded, as movement can interfere with the quality of the scan. Depending on the type of study being performed, you may be given an injection of contrast material, most commonly gadolinium. This is typically given through a vein in the hand or arm and helps to highlight certain areas of the brain. The contrast material does not enter the bloodstream and is safe for most patients. The radiologist will discuss the procedure with you before the test begins.
